On October 3, 1984, Tim Macartney-Snape and Greg Mortimer became the first Australians to reach the summit of Mt Everest. The team of just five climbers summited 'alpine style' - carrying their own gear and without supplementary oxygen - establishing a new and difficult route on the mountain's north face.
The Australian Himalayan Foundation is holding a dinner on September 18th, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this first Australian ascent of Mt Everest.

The story of Lincoln Hall's survival on Everest in April 2006 is one of epic proportions. Blessed with a perfect summit day, it was upon the long descent back to base camp that things began to quickly unravel and turn horribly wrong. Thousands of Australians are getting on their bike today with this year's Tour Down Under participation event at record numbers.
The huge public response to this world class event, a record 7041 participants in the Mutual Community Challenge Tour is a reflection of the growing interest Australians have for cycling. This is more than double last year’s number and well above the 652 riders who participated in the inaugural 2003 community challenge event.
