On October 3, 1984, Tim Macartney-Snape and Greg Mortimer became the first Australians to reach the summit of Mt Everest. The team of just five climbers summited 'alpine style' - carrying their own gear and without supplementary oxygen - establishing a new and difficult route on the mountain's north face.
The Australian Himalayan Foundation is holding a dinner on September 18th, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this first Australian ascent of Mt Everest.
